Homework 04.21.10

Self-righteousness: it's what everyone (including the Romans) lived by. You believe that you are better than everyone else.

In 30 AD (or 3 BC because the time was all messed up), Christ was crucified. The Romans thought it was all over. But 25 years later, when Paul writes about it, there were at least 500 eye witnesses still alive. This was a huge impact for the Christians. People remember Christ. People believed in Christ and what he stood for.

Christians were not afraid to die. This is something that greatly intimidated the Romans. And because they didn't know what to do, they would simply persecute more and more Christians, but this just magnified the converts. Polycarp, Ignatius, Paul, and John were all martyrs and ready to sacrifice their lives if it meant that more people were converted to Christ. They knew the meaning of love, and their love for Christ was so great, so powerful that they would be willing to give up everything earthly in order to see His kingdom furthered.Powerful.

Africa: a pre-Christian civilization

We will start in North Africa and move to Nubia. The people who inhabited Northern Africa were not the black people that we think of now...they were Mediterranean and Greek people. A real study of African civilization has always been difficult and sketchy. The reason behind this is that they tended to have a lot of ruins. They lived by water for the most part, however. Oceans and rivers were where you found them living the majority of the time. Water was essential for this culture. They thrived in commerce. Though many people debate this to this day, the people of northern Africa were a multi-racial society.

The first notable Nubian civilization that we will look at are the Kermas. They flourished during 2500-1500 BC. They began living in the Sahara desert but moved closer to Egypt. Their architecture was very desert-like and this was brought into Egypt and adopted there. In fact, the Egyptians' religions and regular life habits were greatly altered due to the Kermas. These once-desert-dwellers moved closer to water. They were natural traders, and tended to do most of their business between the Egyptians and everybody else.

One great advantage for them is that they were not grounded to any one place. The Kermas had no obligation to stay in any one place; they could just up and move anywhere they wanted. They were our original "brokers" and the official traders of the land. We could contrast them to the highly developed Egyptians who had very refined music and art. The Kermas found themselves getting rich quickly due to being the middle-man. They didn't have a very large army nor any natural architecture. They did, however, build vast and individual villas for the rich Egyptians. They didn't have any great buildings themselves though. They spent a lot of money on their creatures though. The Kermas didn't tend to store up their money, instead they had the concept that since the money came so easily, then it would always do that so what is the use in saving it? They would soon realize that due to economic plunges, their source of money wouldn't always be there. They mainly traded ivory, gold and diorite. They did not trade any grain of any sort. The Kermas were the richest tribe of all the Nubians.

Napatan - This is the second Nubian tribe that we will talk about. They flourished mainly during 860-270 BC near the city of Napata in Nubia. They pushed their influence up north. They, unlike the Kermas, had a large, marauding army. The Napatas began to take over Egypt...they even set up a Nubian ruler over Egypt. Rome wanted to consolidate. And so the Napatas turned to law, politics etc. The Nubians almost took over the whole of Rome.

Mero - another tribe of Nubians who were known mainly during 270 BC - 350 AD. They were mainly diplomats, governors, trading executors, and many with high statuses. They were driven by people like Alexander the Great. This was spread to Egypt and Carthage. Race issues began to subside due to economical and political issues.

Rome was built upon slavery. Slavery is not racial.

In the 8th century AD, Ghana was the greatest "gold coast" in Western Africa. They had city-states and most of this stuff was never documented.

MLIA

Ok, so recently, I discovered a blog: MLIA (My Life Is Average). It is anything *but* average!! A hysterically funny site filled with many amusing quotes, I encourage you to check it out! There can be some inappropriate ones on there, so I thought I'd post my favorite ones that I found. Trust me, I could spend my whole life on there looking at these!!

Today, I was on Facebook when I saw a page that said, "Join if right now your legs are crossed and/or you're touching your face with your left hand." I checked and I was doing both. I am still amazed and still a little scared too. MLIA

Today, I bit my wrist. I was aiming for the sandwich in my hand. MLIA

Today, I sneezed in church. I was a little bit disappointed because no one said "God bless you." MLIA

My dad recently got a metal detector and has been walking around our entire yard convinced that there is buried treasure somewhere out there. The other day I got really bored and so I took all the beer bottle caps from the table on our porch and scattered them throughout the yard. I then had the satisfaction of watching him stop every couple of feet with an excited look on his face only to find yet another beer bottle cap. Best. Saturday. Ever. MLIA

Today, my family got a new tv. I was excited imagining playing in the huge tv box. Once it was set up, i took the box and soon realized that it was plasma tv. I still tried to fit inside. MLIA

I found that I can be an ambulance, a burn victim, a dying pregnant lady, and some one who needs open heart surgery all at the same time and get operated on with a hair brush all in time to answer the door for pizza. I love babysitting. MLIA

Today, I found out the wireless mouse for my laptop works from far away. I immediately played a game of spider solitaire from across the room, pretending I was making the cards move with my mind. MLIA

Today me and my sister were watching tv. A bounce detergent commercial came on and the woman said "Hi my name is Linda" at the same exact time both my sister and i said "Hello Linda". Im glad to know someone else likes talking to the people on tv as much I do. MLIA

Today, I was fooling around on google maps and typed in Narnia. As it turns out, there is a town in Italy called Narnia. Since all of my family is from Italy, I like to know think of myself as a descendant of the Narnians. MLIA

For the last six years, this guy has mowed our lawn once a week. Today I discovered that this guy is my grandpa. I couldn't tell because of the sunglasses. MLIA

Today I was out walking the dog and listening to my ipod. While on shuffle, the songs went 'Walk this way', 'Walk on by' and 'Come back'. I looked up and realized I'd missed the turning to my road. I'm now convinced that my ipod is secretly a SatNav. MLIA

Today I realized that whenever my French friend texts me the voice in my head reads his texts with a French accent. MLIA.

Today, i was at the mall with my friends, when i saw a gumball machine. I only had 25 cents left, so i decided to buy one. When i turned the crank, a bright red gumball popped out. I popped it in my mouth. It wasn't a gumball, it was a bouncy ball. MLIA

Today I was working at McDonalds and happened to walk passed the drive-thru window; five 18/19 y.o. boys had 'pulled up' in perfect formation of a car - 2 in the front, 3 in the back - but were not actually in a car. As the 'car' pulled up, I watched as the 'driver' put his 'handbrake' on, manually wind down the 'window' and begin his order. The guy who was at the window, and is extremely strict, told the boys he would not serve them because they were not in a car. The 'driver' then proceeded to wind up the window, change into reverse gear and reverse out of the drive-thru. The guy in the 'middle seat' even ducked so the driver could see behind him. The guys kept straight faces the entire escapade. I would have served them purely for their unforgettable entertainment, so thank you mystery boys, for making my day. :D MLIA

Today, I got a call on my phone from a number I didn't, so I didn't answer it. The same number called back about 2 minutes later and I answered "hello?" The person on the other end said "hey, i called you and you didn't pick up..why?!" When I explained I didn't know the number they replied "oh, well it was a prank call, so you shouldn't picked up. Now I'm gonna call you again to prank you, so pick up this time" Then hung up. MLIA

Yesterday I was trying to get onto my bed from the spare futon in my room. It was dark so, in MLIA style, I decided to jump. I overshot the distance and slammed headfirst into the wall. But my feet didn't get eaten by a monster. MLIA

today i was at the hospital checking up on my pop as i was entering the 3rd floor i see a man in a wheelchair going as fast as he can screaming YOU'LL NEVER CATCH ME ALIVE!after a few seconds i see three nurses run through the doorway trying to catch him, it made my day.MLIA

Last night I was wearing my new jacket which was warm and fluffy. My feet were cold and I thought to myself "they should make jackets, but for feet". That's when I remembered I have many pairs of socks. MLIA

Today, I bought a pen that has a orange clownfish that looks like Nemo on the top. It was really cute, so I showed it to my friend. After, I told her that I'm probably going to lose it after a week or so, since I'm really absentminded. She proceeded to tell me that if I did lose it and tried to find it, I would be finding Nemo. I kind of want to lose it now. MLIA

Today I was playing hide-and-seek with three of my friends in Shop Rite. As me and another girl were hiding in an aisle waiting to be found a woman we both have never met before walked past us saying, "They're back in aisle 6." without even looking at us. My friend and I could not stop laughing. MLIA

Today in my English class, we were told to write non-stop for 10 minutes about anything we wanted. Thinking of MLIA, I wrote an intense story about how dyslexic dog saved marshmallow world from the evil king celery, and saving all the magical zebras. When I got the paper back I not only got an A+ for creativity, but extra credit for having the most entertaining story. Thank you MLIA for making my class much more awesome. MLIA

My girlfriend is really short, so one night I was trying to make fun of her by saying "high five" and holding my hand all the way up. She said she could reach it, so she jumped up to high five me, and slapped me right in the face. MLIA

Today, while on my lunch break, I looked out the window and saw two grown men in business suits skipping down the street singing 'We're off to see the wizard, the wonderful wizard of oz'. MLIA

Today, I got a funny text. I intentionally laughed out loud so that I wouldn't feel guilty about texting "lol" back to the person. MLIA.

Today, I opened a dryer in Lowe's and a little boy peeked out said "sssh" and closed it back up. I'm still laughing. MLIA.

Today in science, we were talking about forensics. I was curious about the developed technology and asked if there was a way to kill someone without leaving any traces of DNA. The entire class fell silent. I'm 4'11" and pretty much the tiniest person in my grade. Yet, by the end of the day, every one was pretty sure I was a serial murderer and was scared of me. MLIA

Today, I decided to take a cold shower to make myself feel tougher. When the water hit me, I screamed and jumped out of the shower. MLIA

Today my little brother "accidentally" broke me new porcelain doll that i was going to add to my collection. To retaliate, my sister and I waited until he took a nap moved him to my all white bathroom, dressed up like doctors, grabbed 2 irons, and poked him. when he started to open his eyes, we rubbed the irons together and shouted "CLEAR!!!!!" while pushing them on his chest. The look on his face was priceless. MLIA

Today, I bought a package of Play-Doh. On the back, there was a warning that read, "Molded results may vary depending on child's age and level of skill." Thank you, Play-Doh, for clearing that up. MLIA

When I was camping with my mom, there was a father and daughter camping next to us. Eventually I heard the dad say to his daughter, "Did you know, that when you close your eyes the stars disappear." The girl looks up, closes her eyes then says, "OH MY GOSH THEY DO!!" It seemed to take her a while. This girl was older than I was. MLIA

Today, my roommate asked me what I was eating. I said "leftover panda", referring to Panda Express. The look on his face in the second before he realized what I meant was priceless. MLIA

Last night I turned off the lights and jumped into bed. I missed the bed. MLIA

Yesterday, I was REALLY bored in class. So I passed a note around that said 'Everyone stand at 2:20. Sign here if you're gunna do it!' It was 2:15 and i got the note back to me with almost everyones signature. At 2:20 everyone stood up. The teacher was so surprised that she fell off her chair. MLIA.

Today, I managed to convince my guy friend that girls have synchronized bladders, and that's why we always have to go to the bathroom in pairs or groups. MLIA

One of my friends can make a low humming noise that sounds like a phone is getting a call. We spent all class watching people cough nervously and then check their backpacks. Time well spent. MLIA.

I slipped in my bathroom once and my first instinct was to look in the mirror as I went down. The look on my face was priceless. MLIA

Today, my sister and I were at a ballet performance. While we were there we ran into a little girl with a Disney princess sticker on, so my sister asked her "awww do you like Disney princesses?" The little girl barked back NO, ripped the sticker off, and ate it. MLIA

Today my brother and I had a bunch of cool things planned for the day, and when I woke up I jokingly said " Today is going to be the best day EVER." My brother then burst into the room and sang the entire " Best Day Ever" song from spongebob. He's 21. It really was the best day ever. MLIA

Me and my brother both have a printer and a computer in our rooms. Today, we decided to have a conversation by printing word documents to the other person's printer. Most fun I've had all weekend. MLIA

Today is Feb 8th. I checked my email, and the newest one is dated Tuesday, Feb 9th. I officially have contacted the future. MLIA

Today, I borrowed a graphing calculator from the school, and when I turned it on, it said "Hello human, put batteries in me" MLIA

Today, I leaned over to sneeze and put my hand to my face to cover it. I sneezed so hard I punched myself in the face. MLIA

Today, I was listening to my ipod. While listening, I was thinking of a really funny thing my friend said. I started smiling. The next line in the song said: "Let's break that smile right off your face." I stopped smiling. MLIA.

Today, when I was playing on my computer, I suddenly needed to go to the bathroom. I said, "be right back" to my computer. I'm still not sure why I did that. MLIA

Today, I used Microsoft Word on a school library computer. My friend next to me told me that the librarians could watch the monitors, so I typed "HEY LIBRARIAN!" in 28pt. font. My computer shut-off, so I looked at the librarian. He waved back. MLIA

Today, I bought a box of paper clips. The box said that there were 100. So, wanting to know if I was gypped or not, I counted all the paper clips. There were 101. I was feeling somewhat content with myself, until I dropped one paper clip, and have been searching on my hands and knees for it for ten minutes. It is nowhere to be found. Well played paper clip company. MLIA

Today I bumped into the wall and said sorry. MLIA

Today my best friend and I discovered that the handicap stall in our school's bathroom has two toilets. Needless to say, it made my day. It was even better when I sent a picture to one of my guy friends and he texted back asking if that is really how the stalls in girls bathrooms are. I said: Of course, why do you think we go to the bathroom in groups. He believed me. MLIA :D

Today while riding home on the bus from school I was listening to my iPod. I got really into my music and started playing air drums to it. When my bus stopped at a red light, I noticed a kid from an other bus playing air guitar, and he noticed my playing drums. We had a jam session until the light turned green. MLIA.

Today, I wanted to start a Nerf water gun war. I got out my massive gun and snuck into my dorm-room very quietly, where my roommate was typing on the computer. I carefully began to pull the trigger when suddenly, out of no where, she pulls out a fully loaded gun and sprays me with it before I know what's happening. I stood there, soaking wet, and she put the gun away, back under the desk, without looking away from the screen. I walk out of the room, flabbergasted, and I hear her mutter, "Always gotta be prepared." MLIA

Today, my friend pointed out that when on the phone, i unconsciously wave goodbye when i hang up. MLIA

Today, while brushing my teeth, some dramatic music began to play. I got excited thinking that my lifelong dream of having my life come with a soundtrack was coming true. Then I noticed that my ipod had turned on in my pocket and was blasting music. I still walked around pretending to be in a movie for the morning. MLIA

Today, I downloaded an iPod app that lets you operate your computer mouse when about 10 feet from the computer. I spent about an hour hiding in the room, scaring my sister by making the mouse move on its own. MLIA.

Today, I realized that whenever I read something that starts with "Today" I read it like a MLIA story. MLIA.

Today, every time I looked at the clock, it would be 1:11, 2:22, etc. I then thought, "oh my gosh, what if it was 6:66," I then proceeded to watch my clock for an hour until I realized there is no 6:66. MLIA

Today, My mom reminded me of a story from when I was four and she was mad at me and vice versa. I wanted put a sign on my door advising her that she was not allowed to come in. I couldn't figure out how to spell "enter," so I stomped out of my room and asked her. She replied with "Figure it out yourself!" So I went over to the computer and wrote down the letters on the "enter" key. I am now 22 and my mother has my note framed. Why? Because it actually says "Do Not Return Mommy!!!" MLIA

The Contrasts between a Dog's Diary and a Cat's Diary

Thought this was cute, so I stole it from Christian's blog!

Excerpts from a Dog's Daily Diary:

8:00am -Dog food! My favorite thing!
9:30am -A car ride! My favorite thing!
9:40am -A walk in the park! My favorite thing!
10:30am -Got rubbed and petted! My favorite thing!
12:00pm -Lunch! My favorite thing!
1:00pm -Played in the yard! My favorite thing!3:00pm -Wagged my tail! My favorite thing!
5:00pm -Milk bones! My favorite thing!
7:00pm -Got to play ball! My favorite thing!
8:00pm -Wow! Watched TV with the people! My favorite thing!
11:00pm -Sleeping on the bed! My favorite thing!

Excerpts from a Cat's Daily Diary:

Day 683 of my captivity: My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre
little dangling objects.
They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are
fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear,
I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength. The only thing that keeps
me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the
floor.

Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their
feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I
am capable of. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a "good little hunter" I am. The audacity!

There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was
placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the
noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of "allergies."
I must learn what this means and how to use it to my advantage.

Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my
tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow,
but at the top of the stairs.

I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and
snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released -and seems to be more than
willing to return. He is obviously retarded! The bird has got to be an informant. I observe
him communicating with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My
captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe.......

For now...

Homework 3.14.10

The next group of Germanic people we will talk about is the Franks.

The Franks lived somewhere between Russia and Germany. They were large people: they had red hair, they were big chested and big boned, and the men tended to have full beards.

In 496, they had a new warrior lord, Clovis. He claimed the throne for himself and soon became a Christian. I will not say that he was converted because as I read the story, I found it very compelling. God was the one converting and not any earthly person. True, his wife was Christian and spoke to him numerous times to be converted, but it was him...and him alone who changed. As he went into battle at one time, and it was not going in such a way as to favor the Franks, he knelt down and prayed to God (our God) that if he saved them, he would repent and devote his life to God. The story says next that immediately, the opposing side fell under great fear and soon after that their king was killed. True to his word, Clovis, when he returned home, was baptized and became the first Christian king to rule over the Franks. As he came into rule, the Romans used him as a buffer against the Visigoths and the Ostrogoths.

In 508, Clovis made his capital Ile-de-Frace (modern-day Paris). The Franks believed that they the best of all. They had the best part of every tribe out there and that made them the best of the best. You'll notice this in the French to this day. The Franks created their own dialect and were very protective of it.

The Vandals were considered to be the fiercest of all the Germanic tribes. They lived somewhere between Rome and Russia. They didn't really have any cultural achievements and were essentially pirates. This is the reason we have the word "vandal" today. The Vandals didn't come in and conquer and settle down. They loved to tear things up. They would come and rape, burn and destroy and then just move on. There was no negotiating with them. They were monsters. This began to be portrayed in the young Roman children. They began picking up many of these traits.

The Huns were yet another Germanic tribe that we will talk about. They lived in northern Russia and moved southward. The were both fierce and destructive combined. They moved together as a single powerful force! And this is what made them a threat to the entire Roman empire.

In 378 AD, that threat was magnified.

In 451, there was a battle.
In 452, Attila laid siege Rome itself. Leo their bishop, went out and talked to Attila in order to negotiate with him. And due to this, the people of Rome discovered that it was not political men, or imperial men who could change Attila's mind about attacking...it was churchmen. Before this time, churchmen such as pastors or bishops were not regarded very highly. Now, because they were the only thing protecting the cities, they were lifted up on pedestals.

The Burgundians were a Germanic tribe that was called in by the Romans to protect them from the Huns. They were a smaller people group, and had small aspects of the Romans. The Burgundians were given some feudal rights from the Romans. This was the beginning of their feudalism. After that, they began to just take the land.

The Saxons were another Germanic tribe that was brought in to protect Rome from the Huns. They were given land and civilian rights. They became forest people.

The next and last Germanic tribe that we will study today are the Northman tribe, also known as the Normans. There's not a lot to tell about them. They were a lot like the Celts and Franks, though.

There were a few different points that the barbarians invading brought. I will point them out now.

1) The rise of the Church stabilized Rome by keeping its virtues. It began to look like the old empire. That is why in modern days now, the Roman Catholic churches tend to look so grand and magnificent. They were the life and breath; the only thing keeping them alive.

2) The barbarians invading also brought the beginning of feudalism. Everyone was working on their own land.

And 3) It brought about the end of ubanism. The big cities were dangerous. There was less crime, more freedom, and more food in the little towns.

Due to these barbaric invasions, Rome changed and went in a totally new direction. They made a new world.

Absorbing the Barbarians

The Advent of Christianity: Christianity was a threat to the Roman emperor. They believed that the emperor must be above all other gods. Christianity says that God is above the emperor. This was hugely wrong to the Romans

Even the name of Jesus Christ was suggesting the exact thing they didn't believe...that he was the one to save. He was the only on. And he was a threat to the imperial side of life. They had been trained to look at the emperor as god. and not at Christ like that.

The Gospel was written in space and time as opposed to other Roman mythical stories. It's very true and it was all documented. Also, there were many eye witnesses to it.

The Gospel transformed many people. People changed completely because of the gospel. Whenever you killed one Christian, you got five converts because of it! This is the way Christianity spread like wildfire.

GORGEOUS SONG!

Don’t know how it is You looked at me
And saw the person that I could be
Awakening my heart
Breaking through the dark
Suddenly Your grace

(Chorus)
Like sunlight burning at midnight
Making my life something so
Beautiful, beautiful
Mercy reaching to save me
All that I need
You are so
Beautiful, beautiful

Now there’s a joy inside I can’t contain
But even perfect days can end in rain
And though it’s pouring down
I see You through the clouds
Shining on my face

(Chorus)

I have come undone
But I have just begun
Changing by Your grace

(Chorus)

I really thought today was going to be bad...but it hasn't been so awful after all! My dad and sister are gone overnight...my dad is in IL and Rachel is at a friend's house. Jon had work and my mom was shopping for most of the day. Rebecca is at a friend's party. I've been alone here for probably half the day.

I made scones for church on Sunday...and hope to make muffins for breakfast on Sunday later. Then I cleaned the kitchen!! Washed dishes and wiped down counters!! Scones are done and just need to have the glaze put on!

Then! I moved to the bathroom! Cleaned counters, and the sink EVERYTHING else! Almost used up all the bleach! I LOVE BLEACH! Now my hands smell like bleach!! YUM???

Now my mom and brother are home and we're going to have a little party! Pizza for dinner and then a movie! A chick flick! Huzzah! I have missed chick flicks!

The sky was so gorgeous just a few short minutes ago! It was blue and below that was spotted pink and purple and then yellow and then the sun as it was setting!! This morning as I was getting up, it was gorgeous also! I got up and while I was still in my p.j.s I sat on the porch wrapped in a blanket with the kittens and watched the sun rise. It has just finished raining so it smelled and looked lovely.

Last night, I took Titan for a walk...or rather HE took ME for a RUN. :) I forgot he weighed more than I did. We went down the lane and I wanted to take him to one of my favorite places...but it was getting dark and there was someone on the path ahead of me who I didn't know and so it scared me...and Titan too. He was so freaked! I couldn't help BUT turn around!

That's all for now...I got a bit carried away, I suppose. :) Happiness is the way to a life well live to God!! <3

Homework 3.31.10

*When an economy falls apart, it is the baptismal font and the sacrament that bring it back together* In other words, the only hope for a fallen nation, is the church or ideas based upon the church. I think this is key to keep in mind, especially given the way our economy is headed.

Politics are everything. They work themselves into every area of life. I am not advocating this, nor desiring it, but it does despite this. A true conservatist would try to diminish the State when they get into Senate/Congress.

Basilica: the Romans center point. It was a meeting place/courthouse. They used the finest resources to build it.

Absorbing the Barbarians

Then next time period that we will talk about is about the 6th or 7th century. The word barbarians is used to describe anyone not their own kind or tribe. And outsider or foreigner. The Germanic tribes were considered barbarians by the Romans.

In the middle of the 2nd century AD, the Romans heard that the Hun (part of the Germanics) tribe was sweeping through the land coming their way. Panic set in since the end of the Roman empire was prophesied. The Pax Romana empire as Augustus Caesar knew was slowly slipping away due to this panic. Everybody began to loose control. There was labor shortage due to intense military training. Those who did work were watched closely. This was because the majority of people there were slaves. The slaves joined the army, and the rest worked and were watched. This eventually proved to be fatal. The empire was built upon slave labor...unwilling hands that didn't shared the end results. Because of this, there was limited freedom, strictly enforced class divisions, a large slave class and the resources were *very* limited. This was due to a quick collapse of the empire. People grew increasingly more and more unhappy. They were completely dependent upon the slave class who would gladly accept an invasion; it would mean freedom for them. It was now not a royal empire...but a statist culture. The agriculture realm dwindled to nothing. People began to turn into pirates or robbers. The crime rate shot up. It wasn't safe to go anywhere. People began to move away from the central city, which was where the most crime was, and into smaller cities or the country. This made the great city of Rome break up even more. There became distinctive language grooves that emerged from the common Latin base.

Soon, there became an exclusive "club" of conservatism. They became reactive to all that was going on. They kept all the old classical literature and the legal system. And it was at this point that they were looked at as foreigners.

The Germans were the minority in Rome, and this is what got them asked if they would be enlisted into the Roman army. These are 2nd or 3rd generations of Germans who were raised in Rome. This way, the army flourished and grew. It grew so large that it became a culture of war. That's what happens when you cram so many different races, cultures, and worldviews together in one empire. And that is also what is happening now in this current time. The problem is that when we try to fix this by separating the cultures and the races, we are called racist.

The Celts were ethnically related to the Germans.

In 600 BC, the Celts swept down from the north across Europe. They were known as the Germans or the Gauls. They were a highly developed culture. They loved music and art. They also loved body markings and tribal scarring. This began as a pagan tradition. Sports was another favorite of theirs. The phrase "clash of arms" fit them well. They loved pitched war.

When they went out to battle, they wore war paint in bright colors such as blue and purple. They also did weird things to their hair. They are the original punk-rockers/emo. They wore all black. They believed that nothing should detract from the body. Nothing must detract from tattoos, piercings, and funky hair. They went into battle naked and totally freaked out their opponents. Apart from all this, they had very well-developed and melodic music. They were also a people who were attached to land and their home-land.

The Romans weren't so afraid of the Celts as everyone else was. They didn't feel like they were a threat.

At the end of the 2nd century AD, the Celts were completely pushed out of the Roman empire.

Gaelic is what remains from the Celts language. Kilts are also derived from the war blankets of the Celts.

At about the time of Julius Caesar's campaign in 56-51 BC, the supremacy of the Celts came to an end. They had rich land and so were wiped out.

The term German for the Romans meant the Celts.

Visigoths were a Germanic tribe in the 3rd century AD. The were the western goths, and were the closest to the west. When the Huns swept through from the north, it sent the Visigoths to the south. Alaric was the Visigoths greatest warlord. He led a series of conquests in modern Austria. The refuges that they swept in front of them were a threat to the Roman frontiers.

402 AD - the Visigoths joined with the western Roman emperor, Honorius, to hold back the Huns. The way it came about was this. The Romans couldn't handle the refugees that came because of the Huns (or basically the Visigoths). They found that most of the refugees were intelligent and were ready to make an alliance with them. Unfortunately, the Romans began to treat the Visigoths like scum...and like barbarians. The Romans did not honor their alliance commitments. Alaric was very bright however. This combined with the fact that he was known for his short temper and the Visigoths greatest virtue was honor did not bode well for Honorius. Alaric lost his temper when Rome did not honor their treaty.

410 AD - The Visigoths sacked Rome. In less than 35 years the Visigoths were able to overwhelm the Roman armies. The Roman capital was moved to Revenna.

The Ostrogoths infiltrated into Rome. Ostrogoths were the eastern goths and were not as barbaric as the Huns. In the Middle of the 3rd century, nearly half of the Roman army was made of Ostrogoths. Odacer who was an Ostrogoth, came out at this point in the story.

In 476 AD, Odacer got tired of the weak Roman king, so he overthrew him.

489 AD - Theodoric, another Ostrogoth, ruled after Odacer. They moved southward into southern Italy. Because he was a goth, even today, northern and southern Italy have vast differences.

Seussical

Ok, I know I am a little obsessed about Seussical, but I have to post something about it! I am in a musical right now, called Sessical. It is a work of art that puts all of Dr. Seuss's fantastic stories together and plus: it's a musical!! We have worked every Friday since...umm...September, I think. And now we just got done with tech week. That was a practice on Wednesday at CPAC (the amazing place which we'll perform at), and then last night at a random church. We had a run-through each time.

Next Monday we'll begin to get VERY busy. Monday we have 10-10 stuff going on...but I'll probably be there earlier. My bro is on the sets commitee and they have to be there at 7. We'll proably bike over; it's about 5 miles away. And then Tuesday, and Wednesday, and Thursday, Friday, and Saturday we have our shows. But everyday before that, we have 10-10 stuff...that all includes hair, make-up, costumes, and then two run-throughs a day! PHEW! Makes me tired just to type it! I actually don't know how I am going to make it through two run-throughs a day...I am so exausted after one run-through! So I'd appreciated prayers for strength! Thank you!!

Hope this finds all of you in good health and having a wonderful day!!
